Importance of Eye Care
Looking after your health should include taking care of your eyes. Most people are unaware that what you eat and lack of exercise can affect not just your weight and blood pressure, but can also affect your eyesight. This is the sense that most folk fear losing the most.
Eye care can help reduce the incidence of eye conditions like ARMD (age related macular degeneration), Glaucoma, and Cataracts. These conditions can lead to loss of sight and eventual blindness.
What is Age Related Macular Degeneration?
Age related macular degeneration is a medical condition which usually affects older adults that results in a loss of vision in the center of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina. It occurs in “dry” and “wet” forms. It is a major cause of visual impairment in older adults.
Macular degeneration can make it difficult or impossible to read or recognize faces, although enough peripheral vision remains to allow other activities of daily life. Early and regular checks are essential to avoid these issues.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is the name given to a group of conditions in which the optic nerve suffers a characteristic form of damage at the back of the eye which is often associated with a raised level of intraocular pressure. The optic nerve damage causes patchy loss of vision that varies in severity from patient to patient. Without treatment, the loss of vision usually gets worse over the course of many months or several years.
The loss of vision in glaucoma is permanent, but with early treatment, the damage to vision can be minimised. Most patients with glaucoma are not aware of problems with their vision.
What is Cataracts?
Cataracts is clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light causing blindness.
